Today In The Valley (Dec. 8)

Indiana State (1-6) vs. Ohio (3-3)
6:30 p.m.
Freedom Hall; Louisville, Kentucky

Our long national nightmare is over. The Sycamores are in the win column! In their second game of the Marques Maybin Classic in Louisville, ISU overcame a late deficit to win on a last-second jump shot by junior Rashad Reed. Tonight, Kevin McKenna and his players look to start a win streak against the Bobcats of Ohio, who in their last game served as the second sacrificial lamb for Louisville in as many days.

To notch their second victory of the season, the Sycamores must stifle Ohio’s leading scorer, Jerome Tillman. The 6-6, 235 lbs. senior forward averages 21 points and 10 rebounds per game. Against Louisville, Tillman scored 21 points on 12 field goals, added 8 free throws, and grabbed 7 rebounds. ISU must also watch for the outside shooting of Justin Orr, who leads Ohio with 12 made 3-pointers and a 48% 3-point shooting percentage.

The Sycamores’ offensive production rests squarely on the shoulders of Reed (13 points per game), Jay Tunnell (11 ppg), and Aaron Carter (10 ppg). Reed has been a pleasant addition for McKenna’s squad, and he is doing a little bit of everything. He’s shooting 46% from 3-point range, 42% from the field overall, and pulls down 4 rebounds per game. Carl Richard, Josh Crawford, and Keenan Barlow help off the bench, as ISU continues to try and find steady performance in the early part of the season.

Wichita State (3-4) at Texas Christian (6-3)
8:00 p.m.
Daniel-Meyer Coliseum; Fort Worth, Texas

Don’t be surprised if you spot some gold and black in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum crowd tonight. As Paul Suellentrop reports in the Wichita Eagle, this game marks a homecoming for many of the Shox. TCU coaches recruited a few of the Shockers, and David Kyles and TCU’s Kevin Butler are former workout partners.

Once the hugs and kisses with visiting friends and family are out of the way, Wichita State needs to focus on a host Horned Frogs team that has won 5 straight games. New boss Frog Jim Christian, who Jays fans will remember from two losses to Kent State in the past few seasons, TCU is led by Kevin Langford (14 points, 5 rebounds per game), who is the brother of former KU Jayhawk great Keith Langford. They also get double figures each night from Edvinas Ruzgas (11 ppg) and Zvonko Buljan (10 ppg, 6 rpg). Can I buy a vowel please?!?!

Wichita State is coming off yet another close loss; this time it came in Lubbock against Texas Tech. They are led offensively by newcomers Clevin Hannah (13 ppg) and Toure Murry (9 ppg), but that isn’t the strength of this team.

No, this team can rebound with the best of them, and leading the way on the boards is Ramon Clemente. He averages nearly 10 rebounds per game, and he matches up well against most frontcourt players — he is tall enough to match up height-wise, but he is really quick getting to rebounds and making plays defensively. WSU grabs 40 rebounds per game, good for third in the MVC in that category.

The Shox seem to be getting better with each game, so this roadie in Texas will be a big test with conference play – they open in Omaha against the Jays – just a few short weeks away.
