Today In The Valley (Dec. 2)

Evansville (3-1) vs. Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (2-4)
7:00 p.m.
Roberts Stadium; Evansville, Indiana

It's early December and Evansville is following a loss with a game against Southern Illinois. That doesn’t sound too odd, since the past couple of years have seen the Purple Aces drop their fair share of MVC games, including most against SIU. But since conference play hasn't begun yet, Evansville will not be playing the Salukis tonight; rather, the Division II Cougars of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.

While this school may seem unfamiliar to most people, it is fresh on the mind of coach Marty Simmons. Simmons spent five years as head coach of the Cougars before taking the bench at Evansville. Current SUIE coach Lennox Forrester was an assistant with Simmons at Evansville during the 90's (and most recently an assistant to Jim Les at Bradley).

The Purple Aces are coming off their first loss of the season, 75-59 at Butler on Saturday. Going into that game they had four players averaging double figures. Shy Ely was the only Ace to break double digits (12 points) against the Bulldogs. Butler turned a 5-point halftime lead into a 16-point victory.

The Cougars are in their last year of transition from Division II to Division I. This will be their sixth road game early in the season. They've managed just one win on the road and won their only home game. Look for Evansville to be another tough road game for the Cougars.

Southern Illinois (2-3) vs. Saint Louis (2-3)
7:00 p.m.
SIU Arena; Carbondale, Illinois

A pair of teams with losing records meet tonight at SIU Arena. Just as mom would make some chicken noodle soup to cure a cold, a home game for the Salukis is just what C. Low needs to get his team back on track. SIU, on a 3-game losing streak, is coming off a road loss at Western Kentucky (who since bested Louisville).

Ryan Hare, one of C. Low’s talented newcomers, came off the bench to score 16 against the Hilltoppers. In typical SIU fashion, the game started with both teams going 9-25 from the field. Three others were in double figures for the Salukis (Carlton Fay, 12; Bryan Mullins, 11; Kevin Dillard, 10). They ended the game with 17 turnovers.

Saint Louis is playing their final game of a three-game road trip, during which they haven't won a game. The losses include setbacks against Nebraska (the Jays aren't the only Jesuit school to lose there) and Detroit (where former Jays recruit Xavier Keeling dropped 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds against the Billikens).

Rick Majerus is trying to complete his 23rd year of coaching without a losing record. In order to stave off another loss, Majerus will have to get his freshman-laden team (complete with a top-40 recruiting class) to gel quickly. Tonight’s game in hostile SIU Arena will be tough to overcome for those newcomers.
