Today In The Valley (Dec. 5)
Drake (4-2) vs. Texas-Pan American (2-5)
7:00 p.m.
Knapp Center; Des Moines, Iowa
It is here! The early-season tournament you’ve all been waiting for! That’s right, the Iowa Realty Invitational begins tonight in Des Moines, as the host Drake Bulldogs take on the Broncs Texas-Pan American. The first 1,000 fans get a heavily discounted mortgage (Oh, wait. Actually, the first 1,000 fans get a free Missouri Valley Conference championship holiday ornament.).
Drake is coming off an impressive win against a not-so-impressive opponent, the Lincoln (Mo.) University Blue Tigers. Josh Parker scored a career-high 22 points for the Bulldogs in the win, which came just a few days after he had been placed in an oxygen tent and treated by medical personnel in Cancun for what he says was “just a little allergic reaction.”
Parker averages just about 10 points per game for Drake, one of 7 Bulldogs averaging more than 5 points per contest. Drake is still led by Josh Young (17 ppg) and Jonathon Cox (11 ppg, 8 rebounds per game), but players like Craig Stanley (6 ppg, 5 assists per game) and Brent Heemskerk (8 ppg, 7 rpg) are chipping in, too.
The Broncs (that’s right, not the Broncos … the Broncs) are led this season by senior forward Emmanuel Jones. The 6-7, 215 lbs. Jones averages 20 points and 8 rebounds per game, numbers that are sure to jump out at Heemskerk and Cox during the scouting reports and film sessions. And they might want to get a hand in Nick Weiermiller’s face when out on the perimeter, as he shoots 46% from 3-point range.
The Broncs are an Independent school in Division I, and their two wins have come against Colorado-Colorado Springs and Sul Ross State (it is in Alpine, Texas, I guess).
This should be an easy victory for Drake to open the Iowa Realty Invitational.
