Today In The Valley (Nov. 17)

Missouri State (0-1) at Central Michigan (1-0)
6:00 p.m.
Rose Arena; Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

I don’t want to write about Central Michigan than I have to. As required by Creighton fan law, the events of March 20, 2003 preempt any positive things I can write about the Chippewas. The ruined the greatest chapter of CU basketball history in my life, and it will take a little more than learning Dick Enberg is an alum of CMU to change my feelings about what Mike Manciel and Chris Kaman did to the Jays in Salt Lake City.

Anyway, Central Michigan is 1-0 after a 55-53 win at Princeton on Friday night. It was a close game. That’s all I’ve got.

Missouri State, on the other hand, lost to Auburn 75-60 on the eve of the big Georgia-Auburn football game. The Bears trailed by 9 at halftime, but closed the deficit to 2 with just more than 10 minutes left in the game after a 15-3 run to start the second half. It was a tough opening game for Cuonzo Martin’s MSU team, but one that will surely pay dividends experience-wise for the many new and untested players on his roster (6 freshmen, 2 sophomores).

Chris Cooks, one of the team’s few seniors, will need to carry the Bears at times this season. He scored 18 points against Auburn and added 5 rebounds, and had some support from fellow senior Spencer Laurie (14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists). But frosh Cardell McFarland, a 6-2 guard, might prove to be the compliment offensively that Cooks needs to win games for Martin’s MSU team. He added 14 points (3-5 from 3-point range) against the Tigers.

Tonight marks the return game for last year’s BracketBusters challenge, which Missouri State won 90-76. The Bears must beware, however, because the Chippewas intend to “rock the Rose.
